Zapatistas Call for Different Forms of Protest in Mexico

For the past six months, Mexicans have been tirelessly protesting over the forced disappearances of 43 students from a teacher training college. Mexican revolutionary group the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is questioning the effectiveness of traditional methods of popular struggle, including “marches, real or virtual, elections, inquiries and meetings,” to address the “catastrophe” that has engulfed the country.

In a press release, signed by Insurgent Subcommander Galeano, the militants said that even though the nation was in the midst of a “storm,” they could see and hear that “everything is carrying on the same,” and that people are being presented with “only small variations that do not significantly alter the landscape.” “

As Zapatistas, we see one thing and others see another,” the statement adds, “We see that they keep resorting to the same methods of fighting … as if the state were still the same.” F

or the past six months, Mexicans have been tirelessly protesting over the forced disappearances of 43 students from a teacher training college in the ultra-violent state of Guerrero.

In spite of several high profile, international campaigns, including mass marches, many questions remain unanswered and justice is to have been done. At the beginning of the year, the rebels affirmed their support for the families of the missing students.

The Zapatistas have been highly critical of the recent events, which “are not good at all,” but warned that “We see something terrible coming, even more destructive if that were possible.”

The group instructed Mexicans to look outside their own country for answers as to how to fundamentally change the situation the country faces.
